Quadra Island

Quadra Island spans 310 square kilometers in British Columbia’s Discovery Islands, with approximately 2,700 year-round residents. The island features Coastal Western Hemlock forests, remnant old-growth Douglas fir stands, diverse wildlife including wolves, black bears, cougars, eagles, and marine mammals like orcas and sea otters. Governed as part of Strathcona Regional District’s Electoral Area C, Quadra has been home to the Laich-kwil-tach people for millennia. The We Wai Kai Nation (Cape Mudge First Nation), part of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, established presence through intermarriage and warfare in the early 1800s. Today, about 1,100 We Wai Kai citizens reside on Cape Mudge Reserve and surrounding territories, maintaining traditional fishing and cultural practices.
